With that description, one question that may come to mind if it is your first time is “do lip fillers hurt?” It doesn’t exactly sound comfortable getting lip fillers and having a needle pierced into your lips. Taken at face value, it doesn’t really sound like one of those things you would do voluntarily.
However, as you will see, these Cosmetic Injections Melbourne are not nearly as painful an experience as they sound for patients.
Interestingly, the lip procedure is more or less pain-free. A topical cream is applied before the surgeon starts injecting your lip and this numbs the injection sites to reduce how much you feel.
Even if the numbing cream doesn’t work, (this admittedly is rare, but some clients do not feel the benefit of the cream as much as others) many clinics offer a nerve block, which works by stopping communication between your lips and your brain.
You can discuss any concerns you have about how much pain and discomfort you are likely to have from the treatment with the nurse practitioner or surgeon performing it.
The injection sites and amount of filler required for your desired results will be discussed during your consultation, as well as the aftercare.
Generally, it won’t disrupt your life, but you may need to take a break for a short time to heal.
In the following post, to help you make the decision about whether the lip filler procedure is right for you or not, we are going to look at how lip fillers as a process actually feel, ways you can make the treatment less painful and reduce the side effects and whether it still hurts afterwards or not.
Do Lip Injections Hurt
Popularized in part by Kylie Jenner, lip injections have become increasingly common in recent years. Lip injections are a simple, non-invasive procedure and does not hurt. A practitioner injects one of a variety of dermal fillers into your lips to improve the shape, contour and/or volume while still maintaining a natural look.
Advances in cosmetic medicine over the years have made lip injections much safer and easier. While many people are wary of the pain associated with lip injections, the vast majority of patients experience minimal discomfort before and after.
As with any type of cosmetic procedure, there is a risk of side effects. However, qualified, experienced practitioners are usually conservative with the amount of fillers used and treat every patient based on their unique needs. This greatly cuts back on the risk of adverse side effects – including pain.
Lip injections are usually a positive experience that leave patients feeling more confident about their smiles. If you’re considering lip fillers, you’re unlikely to experience much pain, and any discomfort is usually manageable.
Do Lip Injections Hurt During The Procedure?
Typically, lip injections are fast and easy. Some patients feel minor discomfort and or a slight pinch, but pain is usually brief and manageable.
Everyone’s body is different, of course, and some people may experience more pain than others. The amount of filler injected can also affect how much pain you experience. If you’re worried about pain, numbing agents can be applied to the upper and bottom lip prior to the procedure.
Most practitioners are careful about how they administer injections and start with smaller amounts to prevent pain and complications. If you’re working with an experienced, board-certified medical professional, they should be able to administer lip injections with your comfort in mind. You should always feel free to discuss your apprehensions with your practitioner.

What to do at home after your lips have been injected
After you’ve had your filler treatment and admired the results, the Victorian Cosmetic Institute suggests that you use ice packs on your lips after your treatment. This will reduce any likelihood of swelling. We also suggest you avoid strenuous exercise and UV exposure for at least 48 hours after your lip treatment. If your lips feel dry, we suggest you use a lip balm.
Post-treatment pain
With lip injections, pain can come not only during the treatment but also after it. Again, the likelihood of that is different from patient to patient but if you do not want to deal with any post-injection discomfort follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions to the last letter. It is advisable to put an ice pack on your lips shortly after each injection session. That will reduce the risk of pain, swelling and bruising. In addition to that, it is recommended to avoid exposing yourself to UV light or to do strenuous activities such as working out or playing sports during the first couple of days after the treatment.
To say that professional-grade lip injections are painless would be a lie but to say that this pain is not manageable would also be a lie. So, worry not because compared to several years ago, this type of procedure is much more patient-friendly now than ever before. There are various forms of local anesthesia that can save you from any discomfort so that, in the end, you can enjoy all the benefits of this therapy without its downsides.
