Dermal fillers, also known as injectable implants, soft tissue fillers, or wrinkle fillers are medical device implants approved by the FDA for use in helping to create a smoother and/or fuller appearance in the face, including nasolabial folds (the lines extending from the sides of the nose to the edges of the mouth), cheeks, chin, lips, and back of the hands.
Since some dermal fillers are naturally absorbed over time, patients may need to repeat the procedure after some time to maintain the desired effect. Successful results will depend on the underlying tissue structure and the volume and type of filler used. The time that the effect lasts depends on the filler material and the area where it is injected.
Fillers have become the second most requested treatment in non-invasive cosmetics injections Melbourne. As a physician and an injector, I find this treatment especially to be the most rewarding for my patients. While a lot of the treatments that we do require a few days or even weeks to show effect, this one has immediate results, and clients get to enjoy their desired transformation as soon as they leave the office. But in order for you to enjoy this transformation, there are some Dos and Don’t that you need to be aware of, either before or after the procedure. Here are some of them:
The FDA recommends against using dermal fillers or any injectable filler for body contouring and enhancement to:
Increase breast size (breast augmentation)
Increase size of the buttocks
Increase fullness of the feet
Implant into bone, tendon, ligament, or muscle
Inject the glabella (area between eyebrows), nose, periorbital area (around the eyes), forehead, or neck
These uses for dermal fillers have not been approved by the FDA.

Don’t..
Avoid taking any Over-the-Counter blood thinners one week prior to your treatment. Such blood thinners include Aspirin, Motrin, Aleve, or Ibuprofen. If you are prescribed a blood thinner, make sure to let your injector know to take all precautions.
Avoid over the counter supplements like St. John’s Wort, Ginkgo biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E. If you are on any, stop using them at least 1 week before your treatment.
Avoid topical products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A), Retinol, Retinoids, Glycolic Acid, or any “anti-aging” products. These can cause irritation to the skin, and increase risk of bruising or even infection.
Do not drink alcohol 24 hour before your treatment.
After your treatment
Do not touch the injection areas as you may introduce bacteria and cause infection
Do not massage the treated areas and try to lie on your back during the night after your treatment. You may experience some tenderness, swelling and redness for a few days after treatment
Avoid make up for 12 hours
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours (increases swelling and bruising risk)
Do not expose yourself to extreme movements, exercise or temperatures
Avoid sun beds and saunas for 2 weeks
With lip treatments, swelling may be increased the next morning and they may appear uneven. This will subside through the day
If you experience any adverse effects, contact Alison and your GP as necessary
Swelling may worsen in the first 24 hours, and then should settle within the first few days. Cold packs can be helpful in reducing swelling. As a consequence of swelling, the product may feel harder or lumpy and you may notice some asymmetry. The final result may be judged at 2 weeks when you are invited to a review appointment if you choose.
Bruising may take a few days to appear; Arnica can be helpful in clearing bruising. It is advisable to avoid aspirin and alcohol for 12-48 hours before and after treatment. Tenderness should settle as swelling goes down.
Athletes should be aware some ingredients in the product may show a positive in ‘anti-dope tests’
Please contact Alison if redness, tenderness, itching or swelling worsens after 3 days, rather than settling.
Please do not hesitate to contact, if you have any concerns.
AFTER YOUR INJECTION TREATMENT:
* Do: Use cold compresses to reduce swelling or bruising, but…
* DO NOT: Apply a lot of pressure when using your compress against your skin.
* Do NOT lie down for at least 4-hours after a Dysport treatment.
* Do NOT engage in aerobic activities for 24-hours after an injection treatment. Although extremely rare, you do not want any product to migrate from it’s injection site.
* Do Not sleep flat on your face (if you can help it) for 3-4x days after your treatment.
* Do not wear glasses or hats that may press against a treatment site for 6-hours afterwards.
* Do remember that your final results are not necessarily visible immediately. It can take 14-days for Dysport to fully kick in, and sometimes even longer for dermal-filler to fully integrate.
* Do try to avoid touching the treated area for the first six hours following treatment.
* Do avoid intense heat (sun lamp or sunbathing)
* Do make sure to stay hydrated and drink lots of water, this will help everything work to its full-capacity.
* Do feel free to make a lot of exaggerated facial expressions immediately after your Dysport treatment to make sure the product has integrated into your muscle.
* Do add an extra-pillow under your head before you go to bed (after dermal-filler treatments). The extra elevation can help prevent swelling.
* Do remember to ask about follow-up appointments!
* DO call us with any questions or concerns you may have after your treatment, it’s what we are here for! 215-923-5001
